Each Monday, Cumberland Valley Heating and Air Conditioning will release a new factoid that will include information about our services, products, company history, etc. The purpose is to inform consumers all that Cumberland Valley Heating and Air Conditioning can offer the tri-state area.

Today we are talking about Air Handlers. What are they and what do they do? How are they best used and who can give consumers the best advice on whether to purchase one?

An air handler works with an air conditioner or heat pump to cool or heat and quietly circulate air in homes that are all electric. A Trane air handler can make a significant contribution to the overall efficiency of your matched system. The more efficient it is the less work your outdoor unit has to do to keep your home comfortable.

The air handler is typically located in your attic, a closet or in your garage.

An air handler is used to condition and circulate air as part of an HVAC system. An air handler usually contains a blower, heating or cooling elements, filter racks or chambers, sound attenuators, and dampers. Air handlers usually connect to ductwork that distribute the conditioned air through the building and return it to the AHU.

Small air handlers are called terminal units, and may only include an air filter, coil, and blower. These smaller units are also called blower coils or fan coil units. A larger air handler that conditions 100% outside air, and no re-circulated air, is known as a makeup air unit (MAU). An air handler designed for outdoor use, typically on roofs, is known as a rooftop unit (RTU).
